kelisel asked: Hey! I really enjoy your blog it's very informative. I was wondering if you could give me an idea of the biggest issue that museum people are discussing today. I know accessibility and censorship are major issues, but do you know of any others.
I think my knee jerk reaction is to say that the issue of Cultural Patrimony - ie who “owns” what is in a museum is the biggest issue politically for Museums to deal with. (Whether it’s accessible or censored is solely dependent on whether or not the museum owns something to access or censor.) Because civilizations grow, change, and develop, and because museums try for accessibility, objects are often stolen or smuggled and moved across cultures or borders.
examples of books that discuss this:
- Chasing Aphroditite
- Loot
- Who owns Objects?
- Who owns Antiquity?
- The Medici Conspiracy
- Stealing History
